Another idea that’s been floating in my head for awhile now… wanting to do with creating something from the new cork fabric that’s been catching my eye in the quilt shops! And so the inspiration and timing came together ~ and it was the right time to ‘get it out’ of my head, and onto a quilt… and then paper and pattern 🙂
“Bloomin’ Cool Thread Spool” is a little bit of vintage, and whole lot modern with {the cool new} gold flecked cork, gold metallic fabrics, and pretty ribbons, lace, button and label embellishments. Everything I love playing with all melding together into a beautiful array of blooming floral goodness!
Cork ~ So pretty… and so easy to use. Yes–I still fused it with Steam a Seam Lite 2, and then added collaged flowers on top; also pre-fused and stitched right on through it. Hint: you always to steam so very throughly when you are all done… I steam my collage tops at least three separate times, letting them dry well, in between. The biggest issue people have is that the needle gums up when quilting, and if the glue isn’t dry, gumming up can be an issue. Note: steam only in the end process, when you’re all done with the collage.
I designed a fun little scalloped edge with a smidgen of glitzy gold goodness on the right hand border… a bit of extra batting underneath those simple, four-petaled flowers, topped with a sweet little gold bead, which I hand stitched on when all was said and done… and quilting also with a sweet loopy loop around those flowers. A fun golden metallic needle brings a bit more sparkle, too.
This paper pattern has a full size line drawing, scallop drawing, quilting hints and tips, and the flower and quilting motifs drawn for you as a bit of inspiration, and lots more hints and tips about fusing, cutting, and arranging… including the scale of flowers–and the names of the fabric designers and fabric manufacturers, just in case you wanna collect a fat quarter {or two!}.
Tell me you don’t have a few bits, baubles, lace n’ goodies floating around in your stash you’d LOVE to use up and put in a sweet wall hanging? I know you do! And of course, it doesn’t have to be with cork… any fabric would be cute here, and I’m sure you’ve got some original ideas yourself.
Thanks for hanging out! Let me know what you think… and by the way, all of my patterns are available for wholesale, and I’m setting up my late winter/early spring teaching schedule as I write, too… perhaps I can come to your neck of the woods?!
XO
