This is one of my favorite free motion quilting designs. It is a very good, basic design from my workbook, “the swirly teardrop.” It is best known for it’s ‘fill in’ potential as a quilting motif. I drew it out on a piece of paper.
This is how I start:
“Bounce” or pivot — back and forth — or left to right, and right to left.
And begin to build up in the design. As you quilt, turn in different angles so that the teardrop designs are aimed in different directions. I also like to making some smaller… some larger for more varied visual interest.

Best tip: drawing on paper is one of the easiest ways I know to build design confidence. And one of the best ways to practice design motifs! This skill-building exercise will help your ability to transfer the designs from your head… to your hands… to your needle… to your quilt. I promise! I hope you will try it.
